Background of the Study: Forensic nursing is a specialized area of nursing that combines healthcare and legal systems, focusing on the care and management of victims of violence, including sexual assault, physical abuse, and neglect (Schwab et al., 2024). In Katsina State, victims of rape and abuse often present to healthcare facilities, where forensic nurses are tasked with collecting evidence, providing medical treatment, and ensuring the victims’ emotional and psychological well-being. However, effective forensic nursing practices are frequently hindered by several barriers, including lack of training, inadequate resources, and legal and institutional challenges.
Rape and abuse cases require a unique set of skills, as nurses must not only address the physical and psychological needs of victims but also ensure that the evidence collected is admissible in legal proceedings (Heilmann et al., 2023). Despite the increasing recognition of forensic nursing, many nurses in Katsina State face barriers that impede their ability to provide comprehensive care. These barriers include insufficient training in forensic evidence collection, lack of forensic kits and tools, and the stigma surrounding sexual abuse and rape cases (Ojewole et al., 2025). Understanding these barriers is crucial for improving forensic nursing practices and ensuring that victims of sexual violence receive proper care and support.
This study aims to assess the barriers to effective forensic nursing practice in rape and abuse cases in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, with a focus on identifying the factors that impede the quality of care and evidence collection.
Statement of the Problem: In Katsina State, forensic nursing is an essential component of the healthcare system, especially for victims of rape and abuse. However, numerous barriers limit the effectiveness of forensic nursing practice, including inadequate training, lack of resources, and the complex legal aspects of handling such cases. This study seeks to investigate these barriers and propose solutions for improving forensic nursing practice in Katsina State.
